Bettie Lucas
1948 – 2010

Bettie Lucas served as President of the National Association for Family and Community Education for 6 months. Bettie was voted president elect of National FCE at the Annual Meeting in Burlington, Vermont in 2008. She took over duties of President in the fall of 2009. Her involvement in FCE covers a long period of time and many aspects. She wrote Hearth Fires, and edited, formatted and proofread the FCE Educational material. She designed and drew our Professor Media. Bettie was an FCL Certified Leader and Trainer and was involved in all levels of FCE from local to National for many years. She was a CHARACTER COUNTS! certified trainer, she was on an FCL team that took the material to Kosovo to work with women there. She loved working with youth and did so much in fundraising for cancer projects.

Bettie had ovarian cancer several years ago but had been in good health. In November her doctor found something she wanted to check out further. There was a tumor that they treated with radiation and chemo, this made Bettie very sick. She was starting another round in February when she turned the chair over to Judy Fullmer, Vice President for Program. She resigned as President March 16, 2010. She continued to receive treatments, but they were not successful. Her cancer was very aggressive and invasive. She died Tuesday April 20, 2010. We will all miss her, and the opportunity that FCE missed in having her lead us for her term as president.
